Musik machen

Don't get confused. I can barely say "hello" in german. But I love the sound of the damn language.

About the title of this post... well, I have nothing really new to say this time. But I know now that it doesn't matter because it is highly unlikely that I will get read here again. What's my motivation tonight, then?

I promised nearly 2 years ago that I'd be posting my then new songs here. I was proud announcing that they all contained more guitar parts, and less programming. All of those facts were true. But I also doubt now that someone really cares about what I create, play, record, etc. And this is even more true in these days, given that I've almost no friends left (when you compose something, even if it's pure garbage, there's always a friend who tries to convince you it's not that bad after all; no caring friends here).

So, basically, I ran out of gas. For "publicizing" here my invents (I refuse now to give them the term "compositions", since I have no formal musical training). I still record one or two things every once in a while, but I lost the hope to be listened to and at least commented. Two years I've been absent, and nobody noticed.

Maybe I should do what a lot of people does: consume what is already there. Turn on the TV, the radio, go to YouTube, LastFM etc., and absorb, consume, swallow everything I can. But I just can't do that. I'm just too stubborn. Or stupid. Or whatever makes me insist on making music, even though I'm well aware that i have no talent at all.

I know this is going to sound overtly pretentious (I'm having a hard time figuring out how it'd really affect me), but music has really defined me, helped me go through the hardest times of my life. Music has given me words when I had none. It also allowed me to cheer the beauty of life (when I felt it). Music gave me the means to chant the joy of love, whenever love arrived to me. Music provided me with a fortress where I could safely hide and protect from those who tried to do harm. Music has given me so much, that I just couldn't resist trying to make my own. Maybe my music should have been always intended to be for personal use. Like the toothbrush.

Anyway, I don't really know if I ever will be sharing my music again with anyone (I haven't in several years). What I do know is that I will never give up in trying to really compose. Maybe someday I will share again. Just not in the foreseeable future.

Nevertheless, I've never seen too far.

Ages

It's been ages since the last time I wrote here. Almost a year! That's too long. But to be honest, there hasn't been much news to talk about. Since I uploaded Also sprach..., nothing that big has come to happen. Which doesn't mean nothing new has been created!

Well, in fact several new songs has been made in the last year or so. Currently, there are about 10 songs plus many unfinished compositions waiting to be assembled all together. And the sound is completely different from that of Also sprach... I found myself more comfortable using the only instrument I can play: guitar. So these new songs are fundamentally constructed on a guitar basis, plus some bass and additional percs. And yes, they all were inspired in ReJoyce. My recording techniques are nothing sophisticated, so there is always present a little hissing in all of them. But finally I feel myself totally pleased with the outcome. And maybe in the next future you, anonymous and even hypothetical reader/listener, will be able to judge for yourself.

55. The Creator

As I already wrote, the songs included in this compilation were made in a period that spans over several years; to be more accurate, the first tracks were made aprox. in 2002, and the last ones in 2005. Some of these songs were posted here before; nevertheless, this collection contains new versions of them, versions that were intended to be completely harmonious with the rest of the tracks.

The first track, Prologue, depicts a masoquist view where being depressed is glorious and even desirable. Heavy industrial elements are to be found...

Our Land, Chicoloapan, The Falling, The Enemy Marches On, The End Of Times, Fighting Purple Vegetables, Das Schloss and Die Schwarze Schlange are the oldest ones, and were my first creations using the Fruity Loops software. Even though I was quite unexperienced in using the software, I put dozens of working hours in making each track. Some of them took their name after a really stupid tale I was creating in mid-2005, a tale that is obviously unfinished and will remain that way. These songs were not originally intended to accompany the failed tale, but this failure was an opportunity to give the songs a name, for they stayed without one for several years.

You can find in Also sprach... 3 Vorspeise: they are sort of intermissions, but as the german name suggests, the Vorspeise are entreés, meant to stimulate your appetite for music.

Chicoloapan is an ode to the place where I used to live in. A place not too far from Mexico City, but far enough to be it an odyssey to travel every day from Chicoloapan to Mexico City and back. Going to school and back home took me 4 hours every day, for a whole year.

The End of Times is an apocalyptic vision of the end of the world seen through the eyes of Die Schwarze Schlange. It was technically horrible finishing it.

I'm Always With You is a song on which I worked intermittently. The file was stored in a PC at my lab, so I had no more than 30 minutes for each composing session.

Der Wasserfall is a song full of... water. You can hear the sound of running water both at the beginning and at the end of the track. It took its name precisely after these cute water effects.

The Behaviorist was made at the time I was working on a behaviorism essay. I had my ankle sprained, so I was forced to stay at home and work on the essay all day long; when I got tired of writing, I started composing. Particularly I love the initial beating. It's like a promise, but there's no way to now if it's gonna be ever fulfilled.

Der Rituelle Tanz Der Purpurfarbenen Tanzen keeps the idea of the tale mentioned above. Since it was made with Apple's GarageBand, I didn't really composed anything; I just put the loops together. So is the case of Kreativität?: the question mark points to the fact that mixing pre-made loops is not really a way for displaying creativity.

Finale: FDSG was always meant to close Also sprach... The capital letters stand for... well, I'm not really allowed to say. Suffice it to say that this track was intended to close the collection with a strong and sad statement about the failure of human relationships. Is a way to denounce the brutal effects of depression on the psyche.

The Creator were born more like an experiment rather than a projected song. The words in it are not to be taken seriously. But if you find that they suit you, well, you surely have issues... I had a lot of fun making it. As Die Schwarze Schlange, this one was intended to inspire fear, but for me this is closer to a parody; is tetric in nature, and is kind of a "hidden track" (it was placed exactly after 34, 5 seconds lasting, empty tracks).

You can find the complete Also Sprach Die Schlange compilation in the link below. Of course, the empty tracks were removed.

Die Schwarze Schlange

This is one of my favorite "songs". In this particular piece, I tried to offer a hellish, dramatic, even insane insight into the rotten world of Die Schwarze Schlange. It was an effort to provide a landscape of a "dark side" of what the concept of Die Schwarze Schlange represents (more info on this issue, go here).

I must confess that I was absolutely delighted with the final result. Some people even told me that they felt afraid after listening to it. That was exactly my intention.

Also sprach die Schlange

Also sprach die Schlange (an obvious reference to Nietzsche's classic work) is the title chosen to name the very first compilation of songs made by me. It consisted of 20 tracks and an extra "hidden" track appearing after 34, 5 seconds lasting, empty tracks, making a total of 55 tracks together in a standard CD. The songs were created using Fruity Loops 4 computer program; only two of the total tracks were made using Apple's GarageBand.

Circumstances under which I created the songs were quite difficult. The fact is that I completed the recordings from Also sprach die Schlange in aprox. 2 months. By the time I decided to make this compilation, I had already about half the tracks finished; these completed songs were made the in previous 2 years. In mid-2005 the remaining tracks of the CD were completed.

I only gave out 2 copies of the CD; one for someone unimportant, the other for my friend Andrea. There's only one exisiting CD with the songs encoded in .cda and .mp3 audio formats, as well as in the original .fla Fruity Loops format; this CD, or course, is in my possession.

After making Also sprach..., followed a long period of inactivity, during which I refused to compose anything else. Luckily, things happened that made me had new ideas again. These ideas have been expressed in other songs yet to be finished.

This one was composed in 2005. It was no. 4 from the Also sprach die Schlange CD. I had such a sudden moment of inspiration (?) and finished the track in aprox. 1 hour.
The Plague

This song was made in 2000. The original recording has been lost in the dark of past times. But i re-recorded it; it is this file that recording. I erroneously stated before that this one is the only I actually have; in fact, none of the recordings I made at those days still lives on my possession. Anyway, My memory is healthy enough to remember them well, so I may record them in years to come. This song is just like a mark, like a symbol of a certain period in my life. Nothing else should be inferred.
